Engagement Photos Boise • Engagement Session Tips
Once that ring is on your finger and the excitement of saying “YES!” settles in, one of the first big milestones you’ll share as a couple is your engagement session. It’s the perfect opportunity to document this season of life, get comfortable in front of the camera, and have photos you’ll love for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and framing around your home. Most likely this will be your first professional photos taken together, and sometimes that can feel a little stressful! In this blog you’ll find tips on how to get the most out of your Boise engagement session.
After photographing countless couples around Boise, Meridian, and the Treasure Valley, I’ve learned what makes an engagement session feel effortless, fun, and genuinely you. Here are my top engagement session tips to help you get the most out of your engagement photos.

1. Choose a Location That Fits Your Story
Boise has no shortage of gorgeous backdrops! Rolling foothills, peaceful parks, downtown vibes, mountains, or dreamy golden fields. Pick a location (or two!) that reflects you as a couple.
Love to hike together? Head to the Boise Foothills or Bogus Basin.
Want a classic, timeless look? Idaho State Capitol Building is stunning year-round.
Prefer bold, modern vibes? Downtown Boise always delivers.
A meaningful location helps you feel relaxed and connected, which always shows in the final images. After you book your session with me, I’ll help you find the best location(s)!
I have two options for engagement sessions. You can book either a one hour session (one location) or a two hour session (two locations).

2. Plan Outfits That Feel Like You
Your engagement session outfits don’t have to be complicated, they just need to feel like YOU!
First recommendation is for you (my beautiful lady!) to pick out your outfit first. Chances are that you are the one booking the session, and at the end of the day- you’ll be the one that will care the most about these photos. You want to make sure YOU are looking your best, and then have your man dress in something that compliments what you are wearing.
Depending on the season and location, I would consider wearing a dress- they look good on all body types! If that’s not your vibe, stick with the classic jeans and tops. Keep in mind you will be moving around- A LOT!
Here are some general rules to follow:
- Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully, especially in the Idaho landscape.
- Avoid busy patterns or logos.
- Coordinate instead of matching.
- Choose clothing that moves well and feels comfortable.
- Bring one outfit change for variety (if times allows).
If you’re unsure what to wear, I’m always happy to help you choose options that will look amazing on camera! I always encourage my couples to send me photos of their outfits ahead of time.

3. Think About the Time of Day
Lighting can help tell your love story! The best time for soft, romantic, glowy images is golden hour—the hour just after sunrise or before sunset. Boise sunsets during all the four seasons can be absolutely magical.
When you book your session with me, we’ll choose a time that gives us the most flattering, dreamy lighting. Even if your session day turns out to be cloudy, don’t worry at all! These photos can turn out just as amazing too!

4. Don’t Stress About Posing—That’s My Job
Most couples tell me they’re “awkward in photos,” and I always smile because almost everyone says they are! The good news? You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll guide you through the entire session with easy prompts and natural movement so your photos feel authentic, comfortable, and full of connection—not stiff.

5. Bring Little Details That Matter
Your are welcome to bring items that will help tell your love story.
Some ideas include: A champagne bottle or sparkling water, a blanket for sitting photos, a hat or jacket to switch up your look, bouquet of your favorite flowers, your dog (yes, absolutely bring your pup!).
Small personal touches help your photos feel more meaningful and unique to your relationship.

6. Make It a Date
Your engagement session should feel fun, not like another task in wedding planning. Make it a date! Plan dinner afterward, grab ice cream, or stroll downtown Boise. When you treat your session like a date, then you can have fun and relax (which totally shines through in your photos)!

7. Trust the Process
As your photographer, my goal is to help you feel confident, relaxed, and present. The more you enjoy each other, the more genuine and beautiful your photos will be. I’ll walk you through every pose and prompt.
