One of the most frequently asked questions when booking a fall session is “where are some good places for fall photos?” If you’re searching for the best places for fall photos in Boise, look no further! Boise has so many beautiful options throughout September, October, and mid-November.

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year for family photos in Boise. The golden leaves, cooler weather, warm sunlight, and rich colors make it such a dreamy season for updated family pictures. Every fall, families ask me where the best Boise fall photo locations are, so I wanted to put together a guide of some of my favorite Boise fall family photography spots!
One important thing to remember about fall in Boise, Idaho is that the timing and intensity of the leaves changes every year depending on the weather. Typically, the fall colors are most vibrant toward the end of October and early November, but frost, wind, rain, or unusually warm or cold weather can all affect the leaves. Sometimes we have beautiful 70-degree evenings in October, and other times it can already be in the 40s — so I always recommend planning outfits with layers available just in case!
One of my favorite things about Boise fall photo locations is how much variety we have within a short drive. Here are some of my favorite places in Boise and the surrounding areas for fall family photos:
Best Boise Fall Photo Locations for Mountain Views
If you want mountain views and pine trees, Bogus Basin is one of the prettiest locations near Boise. The higher elevation means the leaves often change earlier there than in the valley. You’ll find golden aspens, pine trees, open mountain views, and beautiful sunsets. It’s especially gorgeous for adventurous families, couples, or seniors wanting more of a mountain feel.

Best places for fall photos
Boise Train Depot
The Boise Depot is a classic Boise photography location for a reason. In the fall, the surrounding trees turn beautiful shades of orange, gold, and red. The mix of architecture, landscaping, and city views gives lots of variety in one location. This spot works especially well for families wanting a more elegant and timeless look.

Reid Merrill Park
Reid Merrill Park is one of my favorite locations for fall family pictures in Eagle. The trees there become incredibly colorful later in the season, and the walking paths, bridges, and open grassy areas make it perfect for families with children of all ages.

Hulls Gulch
Hulls Gulch is ideal if you love the Boise foothills look mixed with golden grasses and warm sunset light. In the fall, the colors become soft and earthy, creating a very natural Idaho backdrop. This location is especially beautiful in the morning. This makes it a perfect location if you have little ones that do better in the morning!

Military Reserve
Military Reserve has SO much variety and one of my consistent, go-to photo locations in the fall. It offers a mix of trails, foothills, open fields, and pockets of colorful trees. It gives a lot of variety without needing to walk very far. It’s one of the most versatile fall photo locations in Boise. The only downside is since it’s such a great spot, it can also get pretty crowded in the fall too.

Boise Fall Photo Locations Near the River
The Boise River areas near Eagle are stunning in the fall. The reflections on the water mixed with changing leaves create such a peaceful, natural backdrop. This location photographs beautifully during golden hour and works especially well for larger families or families with little kids who want space to move around.

Best Fall Photo Locations with Colorful Trees
Barber Park is one of the best spots for colorful fall leaves in Boise. The river, large trees, and walking paths create a beautiful backdrop with a lot of texture and depth. It’s especially pretty in late October when the leaves are at their peak.

Golden Fields Near Lucky Peak
One of my favorite looks in the fall is actually not colorful leaves — it’s golden Idaho grasses. The open fields near Lucky Peak create a soft, glowy, neutral backdrop that photographs beautifully at sunset. I also love having the wooden fence. These sessions at this location feel warm, romantic, and very true to Idaho mountain landscapes.

Boise Foothills
The Boise foothills are timeless year-round, but especially beautiful in fall when the grasses turn rich golden tones. If you love a simple, clean, earthy aesthetic, the foothills are always a beautiful option. Best part is you get the best view of downtown Boise, with usually no one else at this location!

Kathryn Albertson Park
Kathryn Albertson Park is one of the BEST locations in Boise for vibrant fall color. The park is full of mature trees, ponds, bridges, and walking paths. If you want lots of orange, yellow, and red leaves in your photos, this is definitely one of my top recommendations.

Banks Beach Picnic Area
If you’re willing to drive outside of Boise, Banks Beach Picnic Area is absolutely beautiful in the fall. The river, trees, and mountain scenery make it feel peaceful and adventurous all at once. It’s especially gorgeous for couples, families with older kids, or anyone wanting a more outdoorsy Idaho vibe.
