Boise Family Photographer – Julia Crawford Photography

Tip #1: Talk Up the Experience
A successful family session starts long before we meet at the location.
Talk to your spouse or partner about why these photos matter to you—the memories, the tradition, the growing kids you want to remember. Share your excitement with your children, too. Let them know we’re going to laugh, move, play, and explore together.
Kids mirror your energy. If you stay relaxed and upbeat, they’ll feel that same excitement. Even if pictures aren’t everyone’s favorite activity, a positive mindset goes a long way.

Tip #2: Smart, Simple Bribes Go a Long Way
As a Boise family photographer, I’ve seen it all—and I promise you, bribes work for kids ages 3+.
One thoughtful mom at a recent Bogus Basin family session brought Krispy Kreme donuts and surprised her kids afterward. It was perfect! No mess during photos and something for them to look forward to.
Let me be clear, treats or bribes are totally optional. If do you bring treats, choose clean, quick snacks like fruit snacks or Smarties. Save them for the end so we don’t have sticky hands and crumb-covered outfits in your photos.

Tip #3: Arrive On Time (or 5–10 Minutes Early)
Arrive at the location a little early! Not too early though…5-10 minutes is great! A little buffer time can make all the difference. Arriving a little early allows you time to introduce your kids to the location, and change clothes if needed. It also allows the kids can warm up to the location, stretch their legs, and settle in.
If you have little ones, consider putting on delicate or wrinkle-prone clothing once you arrive. This prevents stress and lets us begin the session smoothly, and sometimes even early.

Bonus Tip: Let Go & Trust the Process
You’ve done the hard part—planning, coordinating outfits, choosing a date, getting everyone ready.
Once you arrive, take a deep breath and let it all go.
Kids may wiggle, explore, or test boundaries. That’s normal. That’s real life. And honestly? Those moments often lead to the most authentic images.
Trust me to guide the session. My goal as your Boise family photographer is to capture connection, personality, and the love your family shares—not stiff perfection.
